It was the summer of 2004. I was struggling with poor health. I had mono and it sucked. So I spent most my time in bed reading gaming magazines or playing games. I happened to be reading the preview section of one of the magazines and I saw this weird looking picture that caught my eye. It was this giant ball of stuff. So I ventured further and read the little preview article. After reading about this game called Katamari Damacy, I just knew I had to have it.
So I immediately(even though super sick), got up and started searching for info about the game on all the gaming sites(VixDiesel on GameSpot). So I even managed to venture out and preorder. The weeks passed as I waited for the game to come in. Finally, the week of release, my preorder never came in. I waited three days and cancelled the preorder. I called up some other stores around me to see if they had it in and one did. It was their last copy. I asked the guy to hold it for me and I headed out to the mall to get the game despite being barely able to walk as I was so sick. I got there, got the game and crashed at home.
It so happened that the day I got the game was also my birthday(I turned 24 that day). So I sat munching on some ice cream cake and fired up the game. I swear, I almost fell out of the chair laughing hysterically at the opening video of the game. I spent the next few days constantly playing the game. I never had so much fun before with something so completely random. I even got stuck on MAS 7 for two days. I was so frustrated, I almost gave up but of course, I didn't. I kept on going banana road and finally managed to get the size needed and the 4th step without even knowing it!
I fell in love with the game and was elated to see that there would be a sequel: We Love Katamari. I intently followed the news and info circulating about. I even started an invisionfree message board focused on Katamari info for the Katamari Fans. Then I started to tweak my personal website into more of a katamari fansite.
We Love Katamari was released and I had no trouble finding it. I spent hours upon hours playing WLK and fell in love all over again. I even got my one million roses. Eek!
Then when I heard there was going to be a PSP version, I decided to go and splurge. I charged a PSP on my credit card(ack!) and the first game I got was Me & My Katamari. Though not as awesome as the console versions, I still loved it and played it till my thumbs hurt.
Even though the creator of the Katamari games has stated that there will not be anymore Katamari games, I still have hope. I believe he's said that he personally doesn't want to make anymore games but Namco still holds the rights to it so they could feasably publish more games. I'll keep my and keep hoping the Katamari goodness continues.
